Highlights: Kakadu National Park is a World Heritage Area covering some 20,000 square kms. Waterfalls tumble from the red cliffs of the Arnhem Land escarpment into shady pools; tranquil wetlands teem with animal and birdlife while 40,000 years of Aboriginal cultural heritage is on display in the numerous hidden rock art galleries. While visits to Kakadu's main attractions are on our itinerary including a cruise on Yellow Waters (a favourite haunt of saltwater crocodiles) it is when we get off the tourist tracks that Kakadu reveals its true magic. Our bushwalks are a highlight with opportunities to wander through remote gorges to sparkling waterfalls for a quick dip before heading to our overnight camp. Our itinerary varies with the season, choosing the best walks and waterfalls as the Wet Season floodwaters recede and access opens up. Canoeing down the Katherine River provides a further dimension to our program. We watch freshwater crocodiles bask in the sun while birds and many animals drink at the waters edge as we paddle the calm waters. During the river journey we camp on sandy banks under a canopy of stars.
