The dusky dolphins are known as the "acrobats of the sea" and their antics provide enjoyment and entertainment for those taking the Dolphin Encounter.
Whether you choose to view from the boat or swim in the dolphin's natural environment, you will have a unique experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
The success rate for locating the marine mammals and swimming with dolphins is higher than anywhere in New Zealand. The numbers of dolphins vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions, but generally pods of between 100 and 1000 dolphins can be found on the Kaikoura coast.

What to Bring:

- If you are swimming, you will need a towel, swimsuit and a gear bag for your clothing.
Fitness:
For maximum enjoyment participants who choose to swim need to have a reasonable level of snorkelling experience. Swimming with the dolphins demands a reasonable level of physical fitness for those wishing to participate. All clients need to have swimming ability and a good degree of water confidence.
Seasickness:
This is an open ocean experience and even with the help of medication, there is no guarantee against seasickness. Please note seasickness is not grounds for seeking a refund for the tour.
Age Policy:
In order to swim with the dolphins children must be 8 years or older. The minimum age for watching the dolphins is 5 years.
Season and schedule:
Tours operate daily and each tour has a duration of approximately 3.5 hours. Dolphin location can sometimes mean the tour may be extended.
Tour times:
Summer (Nov - Apr): 5:30am, 8:30am, 12:30pm
Winter (May - Oct): 8:30am, 12:30pm

Conditions:
As this tour is an open ocean experience, all tours are subject to suitable sea conditions and can be cancelled at any time. Management takes no responsibility for unforeseen weather changes that cause tours to be cancelled.
All tours are subject to a minimum operational charge if dolphins are not found during the tour. This charge is at Dolphin Encounter discretion and is reflected in the time and effort required in attempting to locate the dolphins.
Confirm:
Check in at Encounter Kaikoura, 96 Esplanade, Kaikoura. Please call Encounter Kaikoura by 4:00pm the day prior to your departure on 0800 733 365.
Cancellations:
Failure to cancel a tour by 4:00pm the day prior will result in cancellation fees being payable. The cancellation fee incurred will be the full fare, which applies to the reservation in question.
