While I was walking the Hollyford Track, it occurred to me that this would be the actual NZ experience of the characters in my movie "The Piano". It was thrilling and moving to me that it was still possible to feel like the first arrivals in my country, or any country anywhere.

I don't know why nature is so moving to me and the kind of encounter that is possible on the Hollyford Guided Track is New Zealand's wilderness at its most undisturbed, personalised and impressive. The tracks are easy to follow, but no highways, the accommodation comfortable, welcoming and good spirited. And depending on the weather you may be treated to deep and mysteriously moody theatrics of mist, river, roaring surf, light and mountains that are heart fearingly beautiful.

With my granddaughter I walked the Hollyford Track last month and I wish to record my appreciation of the experience.

I thought that the knowledge displayed and imparted by our guide - Bard - was exemplary, as was his general care and attention. The welcome and hospitality given by the lodge staff - Dagmar at Pyke, Jenny and Nick at Martins Bay - was of the highest standard.
