Day 8 - Elephant Seal, Macquarie Island
Macquarie Island has an isthmus where the central research station is based. Elephant seal pups nestle on the beach in grassy patches and are undisturbed by noisy Gentoo penguins close by. There are artefacts from sealing and whaling days, and you will need to be careful of elephant seals making themselves at home around the meteorological station buildings. For those with a geological interest, Macquarie is a youngster at only around 10 million years old, and the information about the formation of the island that you receive on board the ship will astound you.
